Bluffdale, UT

The first settlers to arrive in Bluffdale were Rise and Jen Madsen. In 1862 they settled on the east bank of the Jordan River. Next came Chris Petersen and his family in the same year and then Timothy Gilbert was the next to arrive and settled a short distance below them. Several years later in 1868 John and Robert Spencer arrived. Once the canals were constructed many more people started to arrive. The canal system increased to 7 more in the next few years. William Augustine Turner and his family moved to the Jordan River area in 1874 where he was the watchman for the canals for Salt Lake County.

The Salt Lake County court created the Bluffdale Precinct in 1883. Several years later in the fall of 1888, the Bluffdale post office was established. William Wallace Merrical was appointed postmaster. They couldn’t obtain the name Bluffdale because there was another post office with the name bluff. Since it was so similar the Government denied the name. So, they named the town Mousley instead after the first LDS bishop in Bluffdale area.

With all the growth and many Latter Day Saint member, a church building was much needed. They built a meeting house at 1700 West and 14400 South. John Spencer and William Wallace Merril donated the ground for the church. The building only cost $1200 and the money was donated by church members.
